Where Can I Buy Guinea Pig Bedding and Supplies in Bulk for Cheap?

by Discount Pet Supplies on March 26, 2013

I have a large cage which needs alot of bedding for my two guinea pigs. The problem is straight wood makes them sneezy so i mix it with carefresh to save money, Is there maybe a website with cheaper supplies with free shipping or something? OR an alternative bedding that won't irritate them?
By the way I use kiln dried pine shavings not Cedar.

Pine is considerably cheaper than care fresh and won’t make them sneezy if you look around for a product that is not dusty. It is the dust that makes them sneezy and irritates their noses and, if it is fine enough, their lungs. Despite what TheDarkCynder says, there is nothing wrong with pine provided that it is not dusty. We have been raising healthy pigs on pine shavings for over 40 years and about 80% of show breeders use pine or aspen shavings.

The best place to get all your supplies is locally. With a bulky product like bedding, the shipping is a real killer when you order on line. Look in the yellow pages under "feed" or "farm supplies" to find a dealer in your area. We pay about $6 for a 40 lb bale of very nice pine shavings. Feed stores also tend to have fresher chow and cheaper hay than pet stores and usually have bigger (and therefore cheaper) packages of the other bedding like care fresh or yesterday’s news. You always pay less when you buy in bulk. Since we go through 3 bales of shavings and 30 lbs of chow a week, price is important to us and we would never think of buying anyplace but a feed store

Pine is just as bad as cedar. Just as bad. Any softwoods are bad. Try a hardwood like aspen.

I would try amazon or Pet food direct.. They have bedding too.

If you go to Feed and Seed stores you can buy all the bedding’s in large bags for real cheap. I just picked up a bag of pine the size of a bail of hay for $7.00, you can get the pellets and everything much cheaper at Feed and seed stores as they sell mostly to breeders.

You can use fleece in their cage. I use fleece and it works great. My guinea pigs are litter trained but you could also pu towels or something absorbent under the fleece. And you vacuum or sweep up the poops every day. Most people on this website use fleece.

Heres a picture of my guinea pigs cage. They live on the top 2 floors

You should should use Aspen bedding instead. Random dust from the wood shavings can mess up their respiratory system. Any straight/treated wood is VERY bad for them because of the chemicals mixed in it.

I got my Aspen bedding from PetSmart. I got the biggest bag (that saves you money in the long run!) and it costs under..$15, I believe. It’s going to last me around 20 cage cleanings (if I dont use too much again..Lol).
It depends on where you live though..some PetSmarts can be more expensive than another.

Alternative bedding would be newspapers that use SOY ink. You could contact the newspaper people and ask if the ink is made of soy or not. Other inks are very toxic to guinea pigs.
